Random thoughts and reflections I have as I serve in mission with The Mission Society, interacting with our missionaries world wide and making personal visits to their fields of service.

Dogs and Missions
These two don't seem to have much in common, but the past two weeks have sort of brought them together. During all of our years in Kazakhstan, we never felt we could own a dog since it would be hard to handle with furlough schedules, plus apartment living and really cold winters just seemed incompatible with dog ownership. Although lots of local folks did have dogs. Our kids missed having pets - especially Naomi always wanted a dog. It was one of the many small things that they did give up by growing up there, although there are so many things they gained. But now that we're stateside, we decided last week that it was time. So Lizzy, a Dalmation/American Bulldog mix, is now part of our family.
It is noteworthy that we brought Lizzy home just two days after a dog of our missionary colleagues, who live in a village in Kazakhstan, saved their lives by waking them up in the middle of the night to a house fire. They all escaped unharmed, but the dog was too panicked to leave the house with them through the smoke and flames and perished. Ringo will go down in dog history as a hero. Fortunately the house wasn't destroyed, but many of their belongings were ruined by the smoke damage.
So who knows how the Lord might use Lizzy in the life of our family?!
Jim, before I went into the ministry I had a dog, a dalmation named Sparky. I kept her for about 5-6 years after I went into the ministry. Finally I had to put her down.
I have not had another pet since then. I have thought about getting another pet, but dont because of concerns about taking care of the pet when I have to be gone.
I am glad that you have Lizzy. Is Lizzy an inside dog or outside dog?
Jim, his wife Shawn, and children Rebekah, Keith, Jonathan, and Naomi served in Kazakhstan for 10 years. Jim currently serves as the vice president for mission ministries for The Mission Society, an independent, Wesleyan mission sending and mobilization agency based near Atlanta. The name "Jimbob" comes from high school track days and just became my computer sign-on to distinguish me from the other gazillion "Jims". The "ka" was added (web address) as a Russian diminutive.
Well, I'm not overly hopeful. This is my third attempt at starting to blog. I guess if I tell folks I'm doing it, maybe I'll remember to post every so often. I'm afraid this blog will look like my journal from Kazakhstan. Daily entries for the first week, then 2-3 days apart, then a month or so, then it's too embarassing to add anything at all.
Then there's our family's guestbook - a tradition I took from my growing up years where my mother faithfully gets all guests to sign her guestbook. Even when I visit them for a quick overnight, I sign the book. It's a great record - now several volumes of the many interesting and not-so interesting house guests. Fun to flip through the pages. So we tried it in the lovely new guestbook we got for our wedding. Same result as the journal - it looks like we were hospitible for the first few weeks of marriage, then one would think people quit visiting us. When we finally would remember to ask someone to sign it, it would be too embarassing since the last entry was antebellum.
So, with that disclaimer and lowering of expectations, let's see if I can be different in the electronic world. (if it's now March 2080 and this is the only post, then obviously nothing changed, but hopefully I lived a good long life...)
